Two of the most important mill owning families were the Sutcliffes and the Greenwoods. These family names originated in the area as can be seen from the surname spread maps of 1881 and the censuses of the area.
As some of the wealthiest and most influential families in the valley, they were well educated and travelled and traded globally.
